Quite small-scale but varied and very well-maintained nature reserve that you can easily combine with many other walks in the immediate area in the MaasVallei. The only nature reserve in the valley where donkeys graze.

The Oude Weerd is a diverse nature reserve of approximately 29 hectares and consists of a gravel pond, moist grasslands, ponds, fields, shrubs and willow forest. This small-scale nature reserve is located in an old derelict Maasmeander and has been managed since 2011 by Natuurpunt, which, with the support of the Kempen and Maasland Regional Landscape, the province of Limburg and the Lanaken municipal council, was able to convert the gravel extraction area in Oud-Rekem, formerly operated by NV De Cup. purchases. The potholes were closed, but one was retained and is therefore the gravel pond. The Oude Weerd forms an important stepping stone for all kinds of plants and animals in the nature connection that connects the Ziepbeek and the nature centers along the Maas with those of the Hoge Kempen.

Where the Oude Weerd is now located, the Maas used to flow. The fertile loam soils were suitable for agriculture, but also for the production of bricks. After the loam extraction, gravel was extracted in the mid-20th century. The deep gravel holes that were created were subsequently almost completely filled in. Only the small lake and the shed now remain as witnesses to the gravel past. After the purchase by Natuurpunt in 2011, the design of the Oude Weerd immediately started. The 29 hectare area underwent a true metamorphosis in less than three years. The overgrown grasslands were fenced off and used as hay and grassland. All industrial installations and buildings, except for the warehouse, were dismantled and demolished. The shed and electricity cabin were given a multifunctional purpose: donkey stable, hay storage and visitor reception. The fruit plantations made way for a standard orchard and an organic field with flower-rich field edges. An old neighborhood road was restored to its former glory. Finally, wood edges and hedges were planted and various pools were created throughout the grasslands.
