The Napoleon Fountain. After the French Revolutionary troops occupied the area on the left bank of the Rhine, an obelisk was erected by enthusiastic local citizens in honor of Napoleon. It stands above three fountain bowls. This Empire-style work is decorated with festoons at the top and entwined in the lower third by a snake, whose head eventually becomes the water dispenser. The fountain is also popularly known as the "Snake Fountain." The inscription reads: A NAPOLEON premier Empereur des Francais. Le Canton de Bliescastel le 28e floréal an XII. (Revolutionary Calendar). This corresponds to May 18, 1804. The date refers to the handing over of the Senate decree in St. Cloud that Napoleon would be Emperor of the French for life.
