The cyclist and pedestrian bridge over the lock is a popular meeting place. There are usually a few passersby and/or locals chatting on the bench.

Because the lock keeper's house is currently being renovated, the place looks a little less inviting for the time being.
However, even in these conditions, the jetty low over the water remains a place where families with children, among others, sit and watch the many boats passing by.

Here, the Ghent-Ostend canal (the Brugse Vaart) meets the Schipdonk canal, which was built in the 19th century at the insistence of the Ghent city council to keep the smelly Leie water out of the city. From Deinze, this water is diverted into a new canal to Heist, but it crosses the Brugse Vaart first. As a solution to this, the Schipdonk Canal was drawn underneath the Brugse Vaart via pipes (or 'siphon'). Sas and siphon are still in use today.
