The Chapel of St. Joseph was built in 1709 by order of Catharina de Clercq (1671-1743) on land owned by her father, fulfilling her mother's last wish. The devotion to St. Joseph stemmed from devotion and gratitude for the blessings received through his intercession. According to a document from 1719, the chapel was equipped with a "joeliealthaerken met sijn sculpterijje..." (Inventory of Immovable Heritage)

Saint Joseph's Chapel was built in 1709
The typical road chapel is located within the Hamme - Sint-Anna district in the Polderbroek near the Durme. The chapel is remarkably placed behind four pollarded linden trees at the fork in the road towards the end of the street. Furthermore, the chapel is surrounded by a low beech hedge and an adjacent narrow brick path.

The chapel is a material testimony to the ancient tradition of establishing a small place of worship at the initiative of private individuals following a wish or vow and of the popular custom to ask for assistance when visiting such a place of worship. The chapel also recognisably illustrates the old popular devotion to Saint Joseph. Four lime trees mark the chapel in the flat Durmepolders and are of a tree species that were traditionally planted near road chapels.
A thorough restoration of the chapel was carried out in 1984
On the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the chapel in 2009, at the initiative of the Royal Guild of Saint Joseph of Hamme Saint-Anna, a large wood sculpture was placed next to the chapel, including a representation of Saint Joseph.

This chapel is dedicated to Saint Joseph, the foster father of Jesus Christ. Like Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, he is a man on the threshold of the Old and New Testaments. Joseph came from the House of David, one of the twelve tribes of Israel. He was a carpenter by trade and the betrothed of the Mother of God Mary.
The feast day of Saint Joseph in the calendar of saints is March 19th, and the church also celebrates the feast of "Joseph the Worker" on May 1st.
