For decades, nay centuries, the fortunes of the city of Uelzen were controlled from the “Old Town Hall”. After the tasks became more and more complex, the beautiful and historic building was no longer sufficient and the various departments were distributed in different houses throughout the city. This decentralized division made collaboration more difficult and so a new location was sought for a new town hall. The Herzogenplatz, which was a stately farm of the sovereigns of the Principality of Lüneburg, met the requirements for the construction of a modern town hall that met the needs of the city administration of the Hanseatic city of Uelzen.
