The Meulenwald conservation area stretches from Trier to the Wittlicher Depression, bordered by the Salm and Kyll valleys. The Meulenwald, declared Forest of the Year in 2012, probably got its name from the Roman road, which was marked with milestones and led from Trier to Andernach on the Rhine. Two souls are said to haunt here: The tyrannical Archbishop Milo von Trier (718-758), son of Archbishop Liutwin von Trier, is said to have died in a hunting accident in the Meulenwald.
Another spook in the Meulenwald is said to originate from the spirit of the Roman governor and cruel persecutor of Christians Rictius Varus, who lived in the 3rd century. Could it be that the sighing in the trees wasn't an owl but one of the spooks? 😉
