Created in 1882 by the Royal Saxon Ministry as a "corrective institute for work-shy people", the facility later changed to a nursing home for the sick, the sick and the disabled. While soldiers were being cared for here during the First World War, the complex was converted into the Freital-Saalhausen district nursing home in the GDR era, which was closed between 1988 and 1992 and since then has been increasingly left to decay.

The currently ruinous sanatorium complex is now being saved and transformed into a residential complex with the addition of new buildings. The parks, which are under landscape protection, will also be revived.
