Particularly noteworthy is the mausoleum in the north-western palace garden, which King Friedrich Wilhelm III had built in the form of a small antique temple for his wife Luise, who died young. It contains Christian Daniel Rauch's tomb monument to the queen, a masterpiece of 19th century German sculpture.
The king commissioned the building based on his ideas and sketches immediately after the death of the popular and highly revered Luise in 1810. The planning was in the hands of the architect Heinrich Gentz; Karl Friedrich Schinkel took on an advisory role.
