Ore mining worked like this until the 18th century: First, people looked for spring water in the forest. Based on its color, smell and taste, it was determined that there was ore-bearing rock on site. Those who were experts felt confirmed by certain herbs and mushrooms that thrived there, as well as by the strikingly low growth of the trees and the lack of frost during the cold period. Test prospecting and, if successful, area staking followed. The shafts that were now created were one and a half meters in diameter and 10 to 30 m deep. At the base of the shafts, around 20 m long, horizontal tunnels were dug to extract the ore. From spring to autumn people cultivated fields and harvested the harvest; in the cold winter they went to the mines. Mining was therefore more of a sideline in the family business. Towards the beginning of the 19th century, the veins were exploited down to groundwater. The pits were abandoned, fell into disrepair and slowly filled with earth. And that's why you can see countless small hollows around Kall these days and some of the earth is still giving way today.
