Saint Hadelin, known as Hadelin de Celles who died in 692, is the companion of Saint Remacle, founder of the abbey of Stavelot in 662. It is on June 16, 747 that his name appears for the first time in the diploma of Carloman , eldest son of Charles Martel who gives this stronghold to the abbey of Stavelot. In 891, the monks of Stavelot, fleeing from the Norman invasions, report that they took refuge in 883 on a promontory and that they were saved by a miracle. The Vita Hadelini was written in 1007, which explains the choice of this saint as patron of the parish, long owned by the abbey of Stavelot. There were never more than fifteen houses.

The village was formerly called Soumagne-Saint-Hadelin as opposed to Soumagne-les-Moine, the old name of the current village of Soumagne-Bas.

The church of Saint-Hadelin overlooks the village from atop a rock.
Next to the church is Olne's lime tree.
The church is dedicated to Hadelinus of Celles. The original church was destroyed by a hurricane and rebuilt in 1672 in sandstone and limestone blocks. The single-aisled building had three bays and in 1830 two more bays were added, as well as a three-sided closed choir. There is a slate-covered octagonal ridge turret with octagonal spire. Above the southern entrance is a plaque with the year 1676.
The interior is mainly from 1830 and later, like the main altar from 1847, but there are still some 18th-century furniture: the pulpit, the rood screen (1754), some pews and also a statue of Saint Hadelinus. Organ and organ case are from the first decade of the 18th century.

In the cemetery are some 16th century grave crosses.

In early spring, the stairs to the church are full of spring bloomers blooming on the stairs to the church, eg finger helmet flower.

Nail tree near the church on the stronghold of Saint Hadelein

History

Nail tree. By nailing a piece of cloth to the tree that had touched a painful tooth, the pain was supposed to disappear (principle of transference). It seems that the local priest did not appreciate these pagan beliefs and preferred that people come and pray in the church to remedy the pain. One of the photos shows the window of the presbytery to better observe the people coming to nail pieces of fabric. Thus, he could go there to tear off the fabric and thus fight against pagan beliefs. In the old photo, we see a crucifix attached to the tree. This cross was also to call believers to order. Lightning, deflected by the tree, damaged the church on July 13, 1884 and killed two boys and injured others who were attending vespers. It would be following this “deflection of lightning” that the tree would have gained its healing abilities.
