An information board at the Rudenstein reads:
"According to legend, a noble hunting party once moved through the forests of the Wupper mountains. The young count Robert von Berg stepped away from them, fell down a steep slope in the lonely hunt for a deer and seriously injured himself. His dog followed the other hunters, howled and barked so loud that the hunting party followed him and found the missing, so the loyal animal companion saved his master from a miserable end Counts, the Widdert Transport and Beautification Association decided to re-erect a memorial in honor of this dog in the fall of 1924. The foundation stone was laid on December 21, 1924 - but then the money was lacking and friends of the homeland had the means to continue building. In 1927, the Solingen artist F. Otto Hoppe designed still image of the dog made of artificial stone on the 3 m high stone base. In 1950, 1972 and 1994 extensive restorations were necessary. The statue has been on the list of monuments of the city of Leichlingen since 1986. "
