During the town fire in 1840, the town church of St. Johannis on the market also fell victim to the flames. As early as 1843–1845, a new church was built outside the city on the western slope of the Schönberg according to plans by Carl Alexander Heideloff, who chose the Nuremberg Lorenzkirche as a model. The Pentecost was inaugurated on Pentecost Sunday, May 11, 1845.

The town church of St. Peter was consecrated on Pentecost Sunday, June 11th, 1845. The neo-Gothic building was erected according to plans by the well-known master builder Professor Carl Alexander Heideloff in just 18 months.
The old town church of St. Johannis Baptista fell victim to the great town fire on the night of August 27th to 28th, 1840.

The location of the new church was at the gates of the city, but in the course of the city expansion towards the train station, the church moved back to the center of Sonneberg. Since then, the 45 meter high towers have continued to shape the image of the former world toy city.
