West of Montenau, along the Amel and its tributaries, are quartz veins with small amounts of gold. The Celts and the Romans dug here. Shortly before the end of the First World War (1914), the prospecting for gold ended there because the yield was too low. The heavy material, which also includes gold, was separated from the rest of the material by means of the gold sluice. For this purpose, water was flushed into the gutter.
