Historical horse drinks

The horse trough, which was hidden in the forest in 1940, was not directly related to the RAD camp or the western wall system. It probably served to supply fresh spring water for horses that were deployed in the barracks on Dillinger Strasse in Lebach, which was completed in October 1940. It is unclear what the horses were used for: they were either artillery horses that pulled guns or cavalry horses. The location on the Hoxberg had two advantages: it was protected against artillery fire from the west by the steep slopes and even in dry summers, so much water collects here that a safe supply is guaranteed. The spring at this point was used by Koehler in the past. Directly above the current drinking trough is a historic Meilerplatz, where charcoal was probably made in the 18th century. The spring water was used to carefully extinguish the charcoal recovered from the kiln. Source: Text information board
