Plars Castle was first mentioned in a document in the 14th century, at that time it was called “Mairhof zu Torkel in Plairs” and was one of the most beautiful and largest courtyards in Lagundo. The building was known under the name Torgglerhof.
In 1880 Wilhelm D’Avignon from Leipzig, a spa guest, acquired the farm and converted it into a castle courtyard with a park and villa. At his own expense, he also had the road expanded through Mitterplars. In 1911 the Theiner family from Plars became owners of the house: Franz Theiner, a former Kaiserjäger sergeant, had attended the viticulture college in Klosterneuburg. In 1974 the building was completely renovated.
Today, the third generation of the Theiner family manages Schloss Plars and offers guests a boutique hotel with its own winery with quality wines. The castle cannot be visited, but the popular Algunder Waalweg leads past Plars Castle.
