A very beautiful, partly restored ruin, lies on a steep porphyry rock above the Gaider gorge, about 450 meters above the valley floor of the Adige, in the municipality of Appiano.
We were lucky that the gates were open and we were allowed to visit the ruin, which is probably offered by the Andrian tourist office every now and then.

The castle is only open on fixed dates (see: andrian.info/burgruine-festenstein/). When it is open, there are two very nice local people who can tell you a lot about the structure and history of the castle - absolute recommendation.
