Until the 1950s, the playground was used as a pit, i.e. as a mountain pasture for sheep and cattle. Like so many shafts in the Bavarian Forest, the open pasture landscape has been preserved to this day and offers a nice change from the dense forests. The Tummelplatzhütte, a research station of the national park administration, still bears the traditional name of the pit.

The playground is located at an altitude of 1130 meters northwest of Mauth and has an area of 2.6 hectares. The playground, which was used by the Schönbrunn glassworks and the Kirchl farmers as a forest pasture, was first mentioned in 1809. The wooden house, which still exists today, was built in 1860 and was used by forestry workers until 1956. Today the building of the Bavarian Forest National Park Administration serves as a research station. The play area invites you to take a break due to its idyllic location. From there, hiking trails lead in many directions, such as to Lusen, Finsterau or Mauth. A short detour to the Grossalmeyer castle, a lookout rock, can be reached from the playground, which can be reached in about 10 minutes via a forest path in a southerly direction.
