The 1260 meter high mountain consists of two small peaks a few hundred meters apart. It is located about two and a half kilometers southeast of the Lusen, which is just over a hundred meters higher. The Hohlstein (also Großalmeyer castle, 1260 m) is located in the south about 1300 meters away. In the valley between the two mountains is the playground, formerly a pasture (shafts), today a meeting point for some hiking trails. In the north is the Hohe Filzberg (1279 m). To the east, the mountain falls into the valley of the Reschbach. The closest towns are Finsterau in the east and Waldhäuser in the west.

Like the Lusen and some other surrounding mountains, the spruce stock in the Sulzriegel summit region was almost completely destroyed by the bark beetle. Since the mountain lies entirely in the Bavarian Forest National Park, no countermeasures were taken, but nature was left to its own devices
