Now only the contours of the five-pointed defensive wall still remind us of the fort. But a few centuries ago it was a fortified village. Fort de Voorn was then located on a small island called De Voorn. It was a strategic point with a view of both the Maas and the Waal. Whoever controlled this point had power over trade with the entire hinterland of (present-day) Germany and Belgium. And conversely you could secure the whole of Holland with it.
During the 80-year war, or the Dutch Revolt, the Spaniards advanced to the north. But they failed to capture Fort de Voorn and decided to build a new fort themselves, Sint Andries, just a few kilometers away. A fierce battle ensued between the Spaniards and the Staatsen. The Spaniards fought from the nearby Fort Sint Andries and the Staatsen from Fort De Voorn.
