Many crosses have legends attached to them that tell a special story about each specimen. However, their exact age and veracity are often not verifiable. The oldest stone atonement crosses date from the 13th to 16th centuries, mostly in a simple cross shape without text, at most with a depiction of the murder instrument or a symbol that indicates the profession of the murdered person. According to medieval law, they were established in fulfillment of atonement contracts between warring parties intended to end a blood feud after murder or manslaughter.
