This nature reserve is located between the 'Aa' (a tributary of the Nete), the Slootbeek and the Poederlee-Lichtaart road. In the Kempen, 'Haert' (or Aert) means: common, undeveloped land, heath and forests in common use for herding cattle, cutting peat and collecting heather as bedding for the animals. The forest offers a resting and habitat for various bird species. Due to the alternation of old and young forests on dry and wet soil, there is a wide variety of vegetation and mushrooms.

In contrast to most other Kempen forests, which mainly contain young coniferous wood, we still find many old deciduous trees in Den Haert. The nature reserve consists mainly of oak forests with an undergrowth of hazel. There are also some poplar and alder forests.
