The "Hardtwald battery" belonged to the West Wall, more precisely to the Ettlinger Riegel. "The Ettlinger Riegel was built as part of the West Wall in 1936 and 1937. The line of defense extends over a distance of about 10 kilometers from the east bank of the Rhine near Rheinstetten south of Karlsruhe to Malsch on the northern edge of the Black Forest." "To this day, the Ettlinger Riegel clearly documents the conceptual and technical status of a fortified position from 1936 with its further developments up to 1938 and is unique in its form in Germany. Here
you will find "MG Schartenstands" (i.e. bunkers for one or more machine guns) and "shelters" (without slits, only to accommodate soldiers). The "Stands" of 1936 were further developments of the "Regular Buildings" introduced in 1934, which are types of bunkers whose floor plans were to change significantly in the later expansion of the West Wall. As early as 1937, more standardized standard buildings were introduced, which were still frequently individualized – and this was also the case in the Ettlinger Riegel. Today the entire area between
Mörsch and Malsch preserved in ruinous condition.
