According to a legend, the Trendelburg is named after the giantess "Trendula", who was struck by lightning in a field near the castle. The giantess Trendula was one of the three daughters of the giant Kruko (people from pre-Christian times were called giants in the sagas). Since Trendula wanted to remain true to her pagan beliefs, there can be disagreements between the three sisters. The other two sisters (Brama and Saba), who have now converted to Christianity, had new castles built to separate them from their pagan sister. Out of anger Trendula killed her sister Saba - and as punishment from God she was struck by lightning.
The ruins of the castles of the giant Kruko (Krukenburg) and the sisters Saba (Sababurg) and Brama (Bramburg) still exist today.
The Cloudbursts – Wet Cloudburst and Dry Cloudburst are two collapse funnels caused by sinkholes. A legend has an explanation for the origin of the strange funnels: “Trendula, one of the three Reinhardswald giants and who gave the town of Trendelburg its name, was full of resentment towards her sisters Saba and Brama. On a stormy night, the two were returning to their own castles from a visit to their father, the giant Kruko, when the hateful Trendula ambushed them and Brama assassinated from behind. Cloudbursts and heavy thunderstorms had been falling in the area of the murder site for days and the just punishment was not long in coming: lightning struck the murderess and the ground opened up with thunder and swallowed Trendula.”
In the fairy tale, Rapunzel's father keeps stealing the Rapunzel salad for his pregnant wife from a sorceress in the neighboring garden. When he is caught by the sorceress, he promises the sorceress his unborn child. After the birth, the sorceress takes the child and as soon as the girl turns 12, she locks her in a doorless dream to seal her off from the outside world. From now on, Rapunzel has to let down her long hair so that the sorceress can climb up it to provide her with food. A king's son is lured by Rapunzel's song... and after many detours and obstacles... if they didn't die, then they live happily ever after.
The "Wet Cloudburst" is the water-green tomb of the giantess Trendula.
