Just enjoy the historic polder landscape and the avenue of the future, the Geboortedreef.
The flutter elm, which forms this birth avenue, is a native species that is resistant to Dutch elm disease. The trees were planted for children of Sint-Laureins born in 2015, and will be there for at least another 100 years.
Why a birth avenue?
It is almost invisible, but the road is actually an old dike that runs straight through the more recently created Oostpolderkreek. It is one of the oldest dikes in the polders around which the surrounding land regularly flooded and silted up in the Middle Ages. As a result, the dike itself protruded less and less above land over time.
