In 1927/1928, the industrial magnate Karl Haniel had the castle built as a hunting and guest house in the Baroque style and with every comfort according to the plans of the Berlin architect Walter: with a swimming pool in the basement, a valuable library, dining room, salons, 20-register pipe organ, plus in the yard a bowling alley. The extensive property also included a garden center and in the valley a coach house with garages, horse stables and riding arena, as well as tennis courts and an outdoor pool.
On September 18, 1971, a short circuit in the roof beams caused a major fire that burned down the entire house. The reconstruction of the palace began on April 4, 1974, and exactly two years later the first events in the enlarged building began again.
