According to legend, Maternus von Köln founded Saint Peter (Dompeter). Excavations carried out in 1914 have shown that there was a previous building on the same site as early as the 7th century. The current church was built between 1049 and 1053 by Pope Leo IX. consecrated. The church tower was restored after a lightning strike in 1746. The Romanesque apse was replaced in 1823 by today's choir room. In 1933 the Boy Scouts took on the restoration of the Church.

The Church of Saint Peter in Alvosheim, known as "Le Dompeter," is considered the oldest church in Alsace, founded by Maternus, the evangelizer of the Rhine Valley. The portal, the lintels of the side doors, and the central nave remain from the Romanesque period. The nave consists of five bays whose large arcades rest on powerful pillars.
Le Dompeter became a place of pilgrimage throughout the Middle Ages, attracting numerous pilgrims seeking cures for headaches or eye ailments. During this same period, the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela developed, and Alvosheim was still part of the route.
