At a height of 49 m, the Clock Tower stands at the highest point of the city, 103 m above the Cousin valley. Built in 1456 by the master mason Jehan Berg, it is located on the site of the southern entrance of the ancient "Aballo", then of the castle of the counts of Avallon. A prestigious monument dominating the medieval city, this former belfry has been home since 1460 to the four "aldermen" appointed by the inhabitants to administer municipal affairs. They held regular council in a room on the first floor until the construction of a town hall in 1772. The prominent position of the tower also makes it an ideal observation post to prevent any fire or invasion. A bell, installed at the end of its construction, and a watchman constantly scanning the horizon made it possible to sound the alarm in case of danger.

The Tour de l’Horloge is the clock tower of the medieval walled city of Avallon.
It has a rare clock from the 15th century.
The massive building from the 14th century served as an important city gate and seat of the city's night watch. In the 18th century, the tower was partially used as an arsenal. Today the Tour de l’Horloge houses a permanent exhibition on the history of the Remparts d’Avallon, the fortifications of Avallon

Right next to the clock tower is the tourist information, where you can get flyers (French, English and German) for two euros and from here you can hike the beautiful Tour de l'Horloge through Avallon. Always follow the frog symbols and you get from sight to sight.
