The canteen was known to many winter houses in the 1950s because of an ugly incident that occurred there in April 1945. A Russian prisoner of war was found shot dead in the canteen and buried a little later on the Eichenleitenberg nearby. The so-called Russian grave had been tended by locals for years until it was leveled in the early 1960s and the deceased was buried in the war cemetery in Hammelburg.

A common room was urgently needed in the 1920s, when the quarry was in its prime. Unlike today, when only a few people operate large machines, around 30 men used to work there. They were hungry and, above all, thirsty. That is why there was a beer cellar right next to the canteen.

“That was important,” emphasize Gerhard Dremel, Richard Rüger and Eberhard Braungardt, who work on the quarry with Paul Lorenz Kraus that day. In the morning a horse-drawn cart came up from the valley, brought a beer barrel and picked up stones. The helpers dug up an old bottle with a swing top that was still intact. Kraus explains how important the barley juice actually was: he studied a survey plan from 1936. It was made because the communities of Winterhausen and Goßmannsdorf had quarreled about who was allowed to collect the beer tax. The quarry extends over the area of both places. The border runs almost directly through the canteen.
