The short, deeply cut valley has always been called this. It runs through the area from Proschwitz in the direction of Zscheila to Fürstengraben.
The name Heiliger Grund goes back to a legend about Benno (Bishop of Meissen), who was associated with the valley. Bishop Benno is said to have often preached in the valley and also stayed there often. Once, when the people who had gathered around him became thirsty, Bishop Benno is said to have struck a rock with his bishop's staff, whereupon a spring sprung up at this point.

The descent in the Heiligen Grund reminded me faintly of the Wehlener Grund. Not because of the sandstone, although there are rocks left and right here too. But then rather the red porphyry.

Less than 5 minutes from Meissen's city center, you'll find absolute peace and quiet here. Especially in summer, it's pleasantly cool here—which helps on the climb to Proschwitz Castle.
