Johann Matthias Sperger was not only the leading double bass player of Viennese Classicism, but was also employed as a double bass player at the Mecklenburg Court Orchestra. From 1789 until his death he spent 23 creative years in Ludwigslust. He left behind a rich fund of compositions that double bass players can draw on today.

Sperger has now been given a place of honor to the left of the cascades. Sculptor Andreas Krämmer knew how to portray him as a young man who looks hopefully in the direction of the castle.

Johannes Matthias Sperger (March 23, 1750 in Feldsberg – May 13, 1812 in Ludwigslust) was a double bass player and composer. Andreas Krämmer created this sculpture in 2018.

The International Johann Matthias Sperger Society was founded by Prof. Klaus Trumpf on April 17, 2001 in order to honor Sperger's important works, which he not only wrote for the double bass, and to make them better known again. Every two years, this hosts the International Johann Matthias Sperger Competition for double bass, which is endowed with 8,500 euros for first place and 4,500 euros for second place. 65 participants from over 20 countries took part in the first competition in 2000.
