In the 19th century, everything that was too dingy for rich Hamburg settled west of the Millerntor: tanneries, dirty crafts, easy pleasures, prostitution. The harbor had once again expanded to the west, all the way to the landing stages, and the sailors used their free time to rake in their wages on the Reeperbahn and Spielbudenplatz and in side streets. And the rich people of Hamburg also liked coming here. The Urania Theater was built as early as 1841, followed by the Ernst Drucker Theater in 1884, named after its Jewish founder. The Nazis therefore changed the name to St. Pauli Theater in 1941.

Hagenbeck held animal shows in the 1860s where the docks are today. Schmidt's Tivoli attracted thirsty visitors as a beer palace. There were gambling stalls on the eastern, wide section of the Reeperbahn, which is why it was called Spielbudenplatz. This is how Hamburg's most famous district came into being: St. Pauli, as the suburb of Hamburger Berg has been called since 1833. “A lot of money was always spent here, but little of it stayed in the district,” says Gunhild Ohl-Hinz from the St. Pauli Archive, “that’s still the case today.” The anger at being Hamburg’s cash cow (see also: , still shapes the stubborn character of the St. Paulians today.

The history of Spielbudenplatz is described above. The Spielbudenplatz with its theaters has a special meaning. There is currently a large vacant lot between Panoptikum and Taubernstrasse. The Esso houses with the gas station of the same name stood here until 2014, a popular meeting place to get drinks and all sorts of things.

The demolition sparked considerable protests against the Senate and the corresponding real estate company. It led to negotiations and a compromise solution was reached. A citizens' initiative was formed to preserve the character of the district and make social housing possible.
