This town hall is one of the smaller town halls in the Netherlands and has the back against the medieval Nicolaïkerk. The town hall was built in Renaissance style and was completed in 1630 (according to some sources only in 1638).
Today the town hall is used for city council meetings, as a wedding venue and for special occasions. On the ground floor, a lot of livestock has changed hands over the years. Until 1825, this space was used as a weighing house, the place where cattle were weighed. The town hall has a few special features. The statue of Lady Justice in the council chamber on the first floor, for example. It is almost life-size and is depicted without the usual blindfold. The coat of arms of Appingedam can be found above the gate in the facade: a pelican that feeds its young with its blood.
