The chapel of Our Lady of Lubbeek was originally built in 1341 by knight Jan Van Kraaiwinkel on the grave of his two daughters. In 1890, the chapel was completely rebuilt and the legend is depicted in the stained glass windows. On the right side, a whole series of ex-votos were hung outside. From the chapel, you have a beautiful view of the castle domain De Biolley with the castle 't Serclaes.

The help of Our Lady of Lubbeek was invoked for the possessed, the blind, stillborn children, for a successful delivery. Some photos show Our Lady dressed in Spanish fashion (it was a Spanish custom to dress statues of saints in precious and colourful fabrics). From the end of the 16th century, the statue was dressed in a large robe and cloak, leaving only the head and hands of Our Lady and the Christ Child visible. To make it easier to dress the statue, the right arm of Our Lady and the left arm of the baby Jesus were sawn off. Like every great lady, Our Lady of Lubbeek has a whole trousseau of clothing for her and her child, as well as the accompanying crowns and sceptre. These clothes mainly come from donations.

When the old chapel was demolished in 1816, the statue of Our Lady was transferred to the Sint-Martinus church. When the new (current) chapel was built in 1890-1891, the statue returned to the chapel. Because it left an empty spot on the altar in the church after 74 years, a copy of the original statue was made in lime wood. It is not an exact copy of the old statue: the facial features are more finely worked out, Our Lady looks more forward than at her child and the two arms that were missing from the original statue were reworked here.

The original “Miraculous statue of Our Lady in the Chapel” as it was previously called, was stolen in 1974 and never found again. In 1985, a new polychrome wooden statue was donated by the Ywan de Biolley family.

In 1812, the chapel and the cemetery were put up for sale. Buyer: Louis Vanden Berghe de Binckum. In 1816, he had the chapel closed and destined for demolition. There was a lot of protest from the pastor, the mayor, the notary, the diocese and the Minister of Religious Affairs. But they were powerless because Vanden Berghe de Binckum did not want to sell the chapel to the municipality. The chapel was demolished by a team of workers. The report of the first three days of demolition work was preserved in the “demolition letters”. The population watched helplessly. The tomb of the two virgins was desecrated, the bones scattered. Only a few bones could later be transferred to the parish church. They now rest in the new chapel. Fortunately, the miraculous statue and a large part of the contents were saved.

There is no trace left, neither of the old chapel nor of the cemetery. The construction of the new chapel could start in 1890 on land donated by Count Everard de T’Serclaes, the then lord of the castle. The grandchildren of the former demolition of the chapel contributed financially. The chapel was not built on exactly the same spot as the old chapel. But in very close proximity (on the cemetery that surrounded the previous chapel). The chapel was solemnly consecrated on 8 June 1891 by Cardinal Goossens, Archbishop of Mechelen.

That Lubbeek is a living place of pilgrimage becomes clear when you see the almost 300 memorial plaques or ex votos that commemorate Mary’s benefits from 1893 to the present. The memorial plaques point out the varied origins of the pilgrims (some come from Brussels, West Flanders, London) and the variety of favours: healings, blindness, paralysis, passing exams, protection during the war… There are some plaques in French, English and even Latin.
