The Hartberg Museum has been housed in the historic Steinpeißhaus, a Hartberg manor house, since October 6, 1988, and is run on a voluntary basis by the Hartberg Historical Society. The house at Herrengasse 6 was first mentioned in August 1406 and was given its name in 1412 by its owner Seifried Steinpeiß. The name Stainpeishaus does not appear in written form in documents until 1530.

The permanent exhibition of the Hartberg Museum is housed in these historic walls and presents visitors with an interesting and informative, historically documented overview of Hartberg's history. The starting point for the tour through the historical exhibition is an old classroom furnished with adequate interior and appropriate teaching utensils, which was actually in operation in the middle of the 20th century. Starting from the “school”, this common memorable meeting point, significant events and developments of the 20th century are considered. Subsequently, the history of the city and region of Hartberg is rolled up in retrospect. Visitors get an insight into the war and defense history with the focus on the fight against the Turks and Kuruzzen as well as into the social and legal history, which specifically addresses the Middle Ages and the early modern times in Hartberg. Interesting facts about the Roman times and the settlement of the Ringkogel before the turn of the times and regional finds from the Metal Age and the Neolithic Age complete the historical foray.

Numerous exhibits, the use of modern media and various areas for active feeling give the guests of the museum an impressive experience.

City and museum tours are possible at any time after registration.
