The Fens area is located in the northern Ardennes and consists of a series of small moors that extend south of the Vecquée, in the municipality of Stoumont. Once much larger, these moors were largely drained and planted with spruce trees (*the Prussian tree) from the end of the 19th century onwards, so that today only a part of this pristine Fens landscape remains or is being recultivated as part of the reclamation process.

If you are looking for a scenic and historic hike in the Belgian Ardennes, you should visit the Fagnes de la Vecquee. This is a large area of restored heathland, where conifer plantations have been replaced by hardy cow-grazed heathland, ponds and bogs. You will also find the Vecquee, one of the oldest paths in the region, dating from 1569. Along this path, you will see the Cross of the Betrothed, a cross that commemorates the tragic story of two young lovers who lost in a snowstorm in 1871. The Fagnes de la Vecquee are a place of exceptional natural beauty and biodiversity, where you can admire various species of birds, such as the gray shrike, the hoberon falcon, the northern lark and the snipe. It is an ideal destination for nature lovers and history buffs.

Beautiful nature to walk through or along. A very beautiful enclosed peatland area, well worth a visit.
