Großwinternheim was first mentioned in a document in 937. The church tower is said to have been built around the same time. However, the church itself is thought to have been built as early as the 7th or 8th century. A look inside the church is worthwhile.

937 Großwinternheim is mentioned for the first time in a document. The church tower dates from around this time. A Carolingian window in the Ingelheim Museum and a lost baptismal font with Roman script suggest that a church was built in the 7th or 8th century.

Only the Romanesque tower remained from an east-facing forerunner building from the 10th century. It served as a combined escape, watch and bell tower and is probably the oldest fully preserved building in all of Ingelheim.

The patronage was in the hands of the Trier monastery of St. Maximin, which also included the priory of Pfaffenhofen near Schwabenheim.

Reformed after 1565, during the Thirty Years' War church services were held in the church according to changing rites, depending on the denomination of the occupiers. From 1685 the church was used simultaneously by both denominations until it finally fell back to the Catholics after the Palatinate church division in 1705-07.

In 1760-64 they built a new, relatively large nave parallel to the street - see below! This had the advantage that services could continue to be held in the old church while the new building was being built. The result was a late Baroque hall church with a retracted choir closed on three sides, which does not face east.
