Also called the “Calatrava Bridge” after the architect who built it, it is an arched, white and slender structure that looks like a sailing ship ten meters high above the river mouth. Its glass surface has caused a lot of controversy, which is why today people step on a non-slip mat. Via the Zubizuri in Bilbao, also called Puente del Campo Volantin, you literally walk from the old to the new city. Together with the Guggenheim Museum, the bridge is the figurehead of the more modern, renovated Bilbao. The Zubizuri was built between 1994 and 1997. In Basque, its name means ‘White Bridge’. The Spanish architect Calatrava developed the modern metal construction with a glass floor, which later turned out to be not very practical. As a result, the city of Bilbao had to spend more than a quarter of a million to cover the bridge with carpet.

Zubizuri Bridge (Basque for "white bridge") also known as "Calatrava Bridge" or "Campo de Volantín Pedestrian Bridge".
The story of the Zubizuri Bridge begins in 1990 when Santiago Calatrava proposed a structure to connect the Ensanche of Bilbao with the Campo de Volantín street, a popular area for local people to stroll along the Nervión estuary, which Parks and buildings of great architectural interest. However, the city administration did not officially commission him with the project until 1994, which was inaugurated three years later, in May 1997, a few months before the Guggenheim Museum.

The commissioning of the famous Valencian architect to design the bridge was aimed at revitalizing an area of Bilbao that had stalled a little after the decline of one of the city's main industries - the shipping industry.
