A natural cemetery is a cemetery where the graves are situated in a natural environment. Some nature cemeteries are located in a forest or park-like landscape and have graves with ornaments and flowers. Others are located far outside built-up areas in nature and are soberly designed with the intention that the graves blend in with the environment. They are then apparently randomly scattered, there is no order by hedges or fences and there are no specially made tombstones. The graves are often marked with boulders or wooden markings.
One of the conditions for natural burial is that the deceased must be buried without materials that can be harmful to the environment. Natural cemeteries are generally freely accessible.

Nature reserve De Maashorst is located near Schaijk, in the northeast of Brabant. Badgers, deer, amphibians, reptiles and many species of birds feel at home on the 26 hectare Maashorst nature cemetery (an integral part of the area). Forest, interspersed with heather, fen and drifting sand: discover Maashorst, one of the most beautiful places in Brabant.
