King Wilhelm I of Württemberg gave the royal forest authorities in the state an extraordinary planting order, the preparation, implementation and variety of results of which are unparalleled in history.
In the middle of the 19th century, the discovery of the giant sequoias in North America was a great sensation, which King Wilhelm I, a proven nature lover, took as an opportunity to deliver seeds of these giants directly from California and thousands of young plants of the exotic tree species in the cold house of today's Wilhelma in Stuttgart to raise. At that time these giant trees were called Wellintonia in Württemberg.
The young plants were then systematically planted in exposed locations in the royal forests and in numerous palace gardens and parks in Württemberg.
