Thick tower

Or the large tower is the most powerful remaining defensive structure in medieval Euskirchen. It dates from the early fortification phase of the 14th century with walls up to 2.65 m thick and a height of 13.5 m up to the roof.
According to tradition, the roof cone was renewed in the 1950s. The round tower, which is flattened towards the city side, was built from rubble stone, but its corners were additionally secured with red sandstone stone. Inside there are three separate floors, a domed basement, the vault of which was blown out during the War of the Spanish Succession in 1702; an upper floor, with a rib-vaulted hall, which is equipped with seating windows, notched windows, cast iron windows and a large open fireplace decorated with coats of arms. From there a door opens onto the former battlement.
The attic has regular windows on the outside and is dominated by the conical roof construction on the inside. The rooms were part of the city museum until December 2010 and have housed the registry office since January 2012.
