Brunico Castle, enthroned above the town, was first mentioned in a document in 1276. Recently, it has served as an alternative for various school classes. It was eventually sold to the local savings bank and has housed Reinhold Messner's Mountain Museum since 2011.

Built in 1250 by Bishop Bruno von Kirchberg, Bruneck Castle was first mentioned in 1271 as castrum Bruneke. The castle, which sits on a hill above the town of Rienz, was always in the hands of episcopal builders, who repeatedly changed and renovated it over the centuries.
