The small tower belongs to the Trutzbingen, a medieval fortification.

The development of the late medieval fortification is closely linked to the local history of Münster-Sarmsheim. The village of Münster is mentioned in 1410 and 1556 in the building code of the city of Bingen. The townspeople, who were obliged to build and maintain the Bingen city wall, had free access to the markets in Bingen. Palatine Count Philipp (r. 1476-1508) set up a market himself in Münster in 1490, which competed with the existing markets in Bingen. To protect his new market, he had the tower at Trutzbingen built as a customs barrier in 1493. The so-called "market dispute" between the Electoral Mainz city of Bingen and the Electoral Palatinate town of Münster was finally settled in 1495 with the cessation of market traffic in Münster.
