      Apart from archaeological evidences that point to a primitive close to the late-ancient period (S.V), and that would enclose a reduced space, the wall is essentially medieval. With a perimeter of 2,516 m (encompassing an area of 33 H), 87 towers or cubes, 9 gates and 2 gatekeepers, and 2,500 merlons, Ávila is the best preserved walled enclosure in the world.

        A visit to the city walls is well worth it, it costs €10 to enter and you can then walk over part of the walls with great views over the city and surrounding countryside.

          Avila
          A walk around the walled city of Ávila. It is a city in the rolling hill country northwest of Madrid. It’s best known for its intact medieval city walls, with 80-plus crenelated, semicircular towers (compared to Conwy Castle’s 21) and 9 gates, including the arched El Alcázar, on the eastern side. Long sections atop the walls are walkable. Very much like Conwy but without an actual dog’s mutts castle! A stunning stunning place to spend the day ❤️.

          They are great! The gate is a masterpiece of wall work…simply beautiful! I read some reviews criticising the €5 entry fee?? This fee is for entry for the two wall walks. There is a short one by the Alcazar and there is another one near the Múrelos house entry point. Keep your ticket as the scan it at the two entry points. The views….world class!!!

            A well-preserved fortification built in earlier centuries due to the need to protect the city of Avila and its people. To this day, it represents an impressive testimony to the architecture of the time.

              The Wall of Avila is certainly the city's biggest attraction and a visit is actually essential. Only half of the perimeter surrounding the ancient city is passable, but it's definitely worth it.
