Pilgrimage Basilica of Sorrows of Mary, Pöstlingberg
The Pöstlingbergkirche is a Roman Catholic parish and pilgrimage church. It is dedicated to the memory of Mary's sorrows, the patron saint is celebrated on September 15th. In 1964 the church was founded by Pope Paul VI. elevated to a minor basilica.
The pilgrimage goes back to the miraculous image of Maria Pöstlingberg, a vesper image with Mary as Mater Dolorosa, which was created by the Linz sculptor Ignaz Josbt. On November 29, 1716, the first Sunday in Advent, the lay brother Franz Anton Obermayr, who "goed out" from the Capuchin monastery in Urfahr, carried the figure to the Pöstlingberg and attached it to a weather cross.
From 1720 the figure became a place of pilgrimage as a miraculous image and soon a wooden chapel was built to house the votive offerings. From 1734 Franz Anton Obermayr lived as a hermit on the Pöstlingberg. As a result, Joseph Gundomar Graf Starhemberg and Heinrich Maximilian Graf von Starhemberg[4] donated a church. From 1742 the church was built according to the plans of master builder Johann Matthias Krinner.[2] His son, master builder Franz Xaver Krinner, was supposed to work on the facade of the church. In 1747 the miraculous image was transferred to the completed choir, in 1748 the central building was completed and the church was consecrated. Around 1774 the construction of the facade was completed. The consecration of the entire church took place in 1786 when it was elevated to a parish church. From 1891 to 1892 the tower helmets were put on according to the plans of the architect Raimund Jeblinger, fires destroyed the roof truss in 1919 and 1963.[2] The forecourt with balustrade was built in 1937.

The Pöstlingbergkirche is located on the mountain of the same name and can be clearly seen from all sides. It is by far the most striking building that shapes the city's silhouette.
