The development and history of this military-historically interesting infantry position from the First World War is described and clearly presented on the display board. From the trenches to staging areas to the toilet.

From 1907, the Selzstellung was built, according to a decree by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1900. The outermost ring of the Mainz bulwark was expanded in a circular form from Laubenheim via Ebersheim, Zornheim Schwabenheim to Ingelheim. About 350 fortifications were built, including water supply, access roads and railway lines. From Ingelheim there was even a cog railway up to the Westerberg, where the easternmost fortifications were built. With the beginning of the First World War, the expansion was pushed again, but stopped in 1916 due to the course of the front.

Originally, according to the Schlieffen plan, the plan was to invade France via Belgium and, if necessary, allow the French to advance to the Mainz bulwark in the south-west, delayed until victory. Thus Mainz would have become the Verdun of the First World War. Fortunately for the region, the French did not break through from Metz.

Due to the Treaty of Versailles, the Selzstellung also had to be blown up and ground, which took several years. This infantry position was the westernmost point of the Selzstellung, some concrete remains still bear witness to the past.
