At this point there was a late Roman castle, which was supposed to protect the Romans away between Xanten and Nijmegen. Unfortunately, it is no longer visible; it could be detected in two excavations in 1964/1965 and 2006/2007. It is said to be from the 4th century. And had been given up in 416 at the latest, after the Franks invaded.
It is a ground monument so do not dig or touch anything. So that the LVR can do research in the future.
Personally, I imagine, with my dangerous half-knowledge: Otto III may have been born here, in a half-ruined fortress, by his mother Theophanu on June 6th, 980.

The Burgus dates from the time of Valentinian I, which is proven by the fact that 76 coins were found, 70 of which date from the period after 367. [1] It is therefore probably in the context of the Valentinian efforts to repel the Germanic tribes and stabilize the borders of the empire. When Flavius Stilicho visited the Roman province of Germania secunda in 396, a regular troop from Limitanei was probably still in Asperden. [2]

At the latest after the invasion of the Franks in 413, the Burgus was given up. On an area of 2 × 1.5 m above the inner ditch, the archaeologist and then head of the Xanten branch of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Hermann Hinz Nitte found a concentration of iron dolls in the 1960s, between which there were also two early medieval fragments from the 7th century. The excavator suspected that these finds were due to the looting and exploitation of the ruins by the Franks.
