According to the decisions of the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the Belgian-Prussian border stones mark the former border between the Kingdom of Belgium, which was still part of the Kingdom of the United Netherlands until 1830, and the Kingdom of Prussia.

In 1817, oak poles were erected at prominent points along the boundary line. From 1840 onwards they were gradually replaced by stone ones.

With the Treaty of Versailles of 1919 and the associated annexation of the former districts of Malmedy and Eupen to the state of Belgium in January 1920, the border line lost its raison d'être and the stones were no longer needed and therefore no longer maintained, which is why some fell into disrepair or were destroyed by land and land use Forestry measures disappeared. All boundary stones along the German-speaking community, including those that no longer exist, were placed under monument protection in 1996, as were the stones numbered 155 to 157 in the High Fens in 1991.
