In 1928, Gottfried Wiede built a factory to produce the non-toxic gas acetylene, which is used for welding. The company's gas bottles were eventually sold worldwide. But competition grew and the factory closed in 1985.

The small wooden houses fell into disrepair, workshops collapsed, the site became overgrown - for exactly seven years. Then a Munich artist came and set up her studio in one of the buildings. Fellow artists quickly followed. Today, the factory and all its outbuildings are "largely in the hands of artists," as the website states. The artists design their studios individually. From time to time, they present their works to the public on the site in large exhibitions.
