The Schwabentor on the edge of the old town was first mentioned in 1361 as the "Neuturm" and was part of the old city wall. The saying by the artist Arnold Oechslin, which has been emblazoned on the keystone of the northern archway since 1935, is well known far beyond Schaffhausen: "Lappi, open your eyes."

On the northern archway at the Schwabentor in Schaffhausen is the saying: “Lappi, open your eyes!”
The accompanying picture from 1935 shows a farmer with a pig under his arm, holding on to a signpost, and cars driving between his feet.

The Schwabentor in Schaffhausen's old town was first mentioned in documents in 1361 as the "Neuturm". It formed the northern end of the medieval city fortifications facing Swabia. Today, you can reach the suburbs through the Schwabentor. On the western side of the Schwabentor, a section of the old city wall with battlements and the Finsterwaldturm as a corner tower has been preserved.

In 1555, a bulwark, the so-called Zwinger, was built in front of the tower. As early as 1607/8, the bulwark was replaced by a larger outwork with two inner courtyards and two round towers. The two round towers were demolished in 1867.
