Not only for historians, but also for energy experts. A modern version of the principle of a tidal mill can be found in Brittany (France), the well-known Marée Motrice. It closes off a bay where there is a 12 meter tidal difference. This tidal installation produces power during both rising and falling tides.
I have the impression, but am not sure that the tidal mill at the mouth of the Vliet uses a so-called sluice basin. Drainage tanks are used in small harbors along the Scheldt that dry up at low tide to flush silt back into the Scheldt, so that the harbor does not silt up. In the case of the tidal mill on the Vliet, the two are used, at rising tide a sluice basin is filled upstream of the tidal mill and at low tide sent back into the Vliet along the mill. In this way mechanical energy is produced and the sludge is flushed out of the Vliet.

The tidal mill - water mill or also called the Spanish mill is located at the mouth of the Vliet in the Nederstraat. The building complex is the only complete functioning tidal mill in Flanders.
The mill and associated buildings are mentioned as early as 1187. Building activities were mentioned in 1516 and 1562. The entire complex of buildings and site is today a protected heritage site. Mill house can be visited. Consult website. A must for historians.
